Really, umpires?

The Yankees have been a dominant force in baseball all Summer. That is fine it has been nine years since they have been in contention to win the World Series. They had to get back there eventually.

That, however is not what my article is about. My article is about poor officiating, and the basic lack of vision on the field. In the first round of the MLB ALDS, and NLDS the officiating crew made less then stellar calls, it was even specifically talked about on such shows like SportsCenter, and Baseball Tonight. They said that if anyone is going to be calling the games it should be the best umpires that the league has.

Now the ALCS, and NLCS are upon us and the Yankees are of course winning, and you know what they don't need is more help from the umpires. There was a play in the top of the fifth inning in Game 4. There was a hit and Jorge Posada was on his way home when he turned back to go back to third and he over ran the bag. The catcher was there and applied the tag., but before tagging him, he tagged Robinson Cano who was at least a foot or two off third.

A rule in Baseball is that two men can't be on the same bag at the same time, which leads me to my point that Cano couldn't be on the bag because if you watch the clip you would see him stop and wait because he knows that rule. So this begs the question, How did he not get called out? Some how only Posada got called out. Instead of it being an inning ending double play, it became first and third, with two outs.

This is why I think coaches should be able to challenge plays. They should have little red flags or something that should allow the umpires to review the play. I feel that it shouldn't make the game redculous, but maybe three a game tops. I just feel that especially in a situation like this that with a second look it is so clear that it can really change the game. Now with this game interestingly enough the inning ended soon after with no more runs being scored, and the Yankees went on to score five more runs, but never the less this could have been a game changing point.
